archwire
The wire that attaches into brackets and bands in order to direct tooth movement.
band (orthodontic)
A thin stainless steel ring that is closely adapted to fit the contours of back teeth and cemented into place.
bracket
The orthodontic attachment that is glued to teeth and which holds an archwire. Brackets can metal, ceramic (clear) or plastic.
debanding
The removal of orthodontic appliances.
elastics (rubber bands)
Used to move teeth in prescribed direction to correct bites.
headgear
An extraoral appliance used when necessary for growth modification, tooth movement or anchorage.
Mara
Fixed appliance that corrects overbite.
maxillary
Pertaining to the upper jaw. May be used to describe teeth, dental restorations, orthodontic appliances or facial structures.
orthognathic surgery
Surgery used to alter relationships of teeth and supporting bones, usually accomplished in conjunction with orthodontic therapy.
overbite
Vertical overlap of upper teeth over lower teeth. A slight amount of overbite is desired.
radiograph
An x-ray image (film or digital) that is used to visualize teeth, bones and other structures in order to better diagnose and treat patients.
retainer
A removable or fixed orthodontic appliance that is used to maintain the position of the teeth following treatment.
retention
The period following active orthodontic treatment during which retainers are worn.
